New Guide Hall

A big step forward in the history of the Girl Guide movement in Gisborne was taken this month when the first concrete for the foundations of the new Guide Hall in Palmerston Road was poured at a ceremony attended by guides and brownies, their officers, and members of the public.

Mr J. T. Hill, chairman of the Girl Guide Hall Committee, is shown addressing the gathering. At left of Mr Hill is Mr H. B. Williams, one of the main benefactors in the venture, and at right is Mr Reg Keeling, M. P.

Mr Williams is seen shovelling the first cement mix into the foundation. Behind Mr Williams are some of the guides and brownies, who have not been idle in recent months in raising money for their hall.

Present at the ceremony was Kay McRae (right), one of 25 or 30 N. Z. guides who will visit Manilla for the Baden-Powell centenary celebrations next January. With her is Joan Todd, who was also nominated for the trip.

Also present was a Canadian Guide trainer, Miss D. Farthing, seen here (centre) with Mrs J. C. O. Hill, District Commissioner, and Mrs J. S. Nugent, Divisional Commissioner.
