Toll Lines Go Underground

Gisborne's southern toll lines are going underground. Already the cables, travelling under the Gladstone Road footpath to Lytton Road, are in place. As soon as they are linked up and a few other adjustments made, the existing aerial wires will be dismantled.

These pictures show Post and Telegraph men installing the last length of lead—sheathed cable along Customhouse Street, between Gladstone Road and the exchange building. Each length of cable carries 124 pairs of wires. Cable is drawn into ducts by winch, operated from truck (below).
