Bigger and Bigger

In these last two pictures from Gisborne-ite Bob Hepburn who is working in the mining region of Newman in Western Australia the size of the machines in that area just seem to get bigger and bigger.

Young Grant Hepburn is dwarfed by the bucket alone of the fully assembled P & H 2800 shovel. The whole machine tips the scales at just on 800 ton on the "pads." The actual shovel itself weighs 80,000lbs!

Bob Hepburn himself pictured in front of the radiator of a "Wabeo" (Westing-house Air Brake Company) 3200A 200 ton Haulpak which is used to cart waste material from the mining benches. Maybe we should just stick to our little old wheelbarrows and be done with it!
