Spirited Boxing

Sixteen bouts provided some fine, spirited boxing at the Y.M.C.A. Stadium when boxers from Australia, Auckland and Gisborne met there recently. The Australian boys (of the Warwick Farm Club in Queensland) were on a New Zealand trip. A keen crowd gave all boxers enthusiastic support.

Auckland's Alan Stankovich (right) sizes up Gary Dowden. Stankovich (New Zealand lightweight champion) won the bout in the second round after the referee stopped the fight.

Spencer Holmes (right) had no answer to Tom Brackin's apparently unusual techniques which included a lot of leaning and forcing to the ropes.

×

Alan Waru (right) had no trouble taking an unanimous decision over G. Hammond.

A dogged and lightning fast boxer, P. Maurirere had too much pace and skill for B. Furness. The right was stopped in the first round.

On the other hand Australian K. Wilson (left) had too much power and pace for H. Haenga and this bout was also stopped in the first round.

Although seen taking a left from G. Carlyle of Gisborne, R. Brackin won this bout.
