Half Is Better Than None – Or Is It?

While out fishing on the briny near Bank Rock with his cohort Russell Searle, Gordon Redgrave (left) of 13 Walsh Street hooked a 21b tarakihi. He was just pulling this in when the fish was swallowed whole by a kingfish which is estimated to have weighed 501b. Now this was good sport for Gordon, who was getting along nicely with the kingi. Suddenly it appeared to have gained super strength and took off. But not for long because just as suddenly the fish seemed to give up and come in quietly. And no wonder — there was only half of it there! The size of the bite and the shape of the teeth marks give every indication that the other half was hacked off by a mako shark. Quite an experience for Gordon Redgrave who is holding the tarakihi and what is left of the kingi. Not to worry tho' because, as they say, there are plenty more fish in the sea!
