Trophy To Frances Pere

Frances Pere became Gisborne's first Sportswoman Of The Year on September 17. A gala sportswomen's dinner was held in the Archery Club Hall at which the title was announced. Six sportswomen were nominated for the title and they were guests, along with more than 250 other women, at the dinner which raised just on $1200 for the Crippled Children Society. Nineteen-year-old Frances Pere was nominated by the Gisborne Park Golf Club. She has a very impressive record already in the golfing world. She has been a member of the Russell Grace team, won the Maori Ladies' championship four times in a row, qualified to play in the Australian Open, was in the 1973 and 1974 Tasman Cup team, has been in both the New Zealand junior and senior ladies' representative teams, and was captain of the New Zealand junior team in Australia in 1972.
