Pictures From The Past

Gisborne City's game against Wellington Diamond United in the semi-final for this year's Chatham Cup has brought to this page (from Mrs J. Hibbert, Sheehan Street) this picture of the Gisborne Thistle Club which played Auckland's Tramways for the North Island semi-final in 1929. They must have had the same kind of winter as this year. The ground could hardly be seen for water and the team was so muddy and dirty that they had to walk back to their pub after the game. They lost to Tramways 8-1.

From Mrs K. McGrannachan, Childers Road, comes this picture of a “wool-wagon-train” of about 60 years ago. The wagons brought the wool into the port, from the various stations in the district, for shipment out. Taken at Makaraka (about where Hills timber yard is now) this shot shows the first wagon of the train being attended by the late Barney Fitzpatrick, and being driven by the late Charlie McGrannachan, snr.
