Whirling “Birds”
Out of the sky at the Showgrounds came three “birds” in the delightful shape of the three candidates for the War Memorial Theatre Fund Queen Carnival. The occasion was the combined gala day organised by the Arts, City and Country Queen committees and a very successful day it was, with all stalls doing brisk business.

After landing the Queens the helicopter took off again, this time to distribute oodles of sweets to the kiddies in a lolly scramble. Here are just some of the hundreds of kids waiting for that event
And here they are, out for the scramble

This clothing and book stall did good business all day

The display of some of the martial arts by members of the Y.M.C.A. club drew a big crowd while it was on.

Buying goodies at a gala is hard work and people need feeding — so what better things to eat in the fresh (?) air than good old bangers from a Turanga Lions barbecue!
"Come and buy my bangers — if you can find them!"
The smoke clears and the gourmet cook is seen to be none other than Lion Peter Scott.
“Of course, if you don't like 'em you know what you can do!”
However, working blokes do get hungry, and a trifle thirsty, and bangers are definitely in. Alan Peake, Neville Spence, Francis Yates and David Moore enjoy a bit of a munch before continuing on their working way.
