Honour For Mayoress

An M.B.E. was conferred on Giborne's Mayoress, Mrs H. H. Barker, in the recent Queen's Birthday Honours List. Mrs Barker has long been associated with many organisations including the Gisborne Free Kindergarten (of which she was the founder), the Maori Women's Welfare League (of which she is a life member) and the Edward Murphy Hospital (where she is still chairman of the Advisory Committee). Mrs Barker was active in the Patriotic League during the war, and also served in the Voluntary Aid Division of St John. The Mayoress has also been long standing patroness of the Victoria League, the Business and Professional Women's Club, the Old Folk's Association and the Riverside Women's Bowling Club.

Amanda Jane Shaw, daughter of Mr and Mrs I. G. Shaw, 5 Seymour Road, has graduated from the University of Otago with a Bachelor of Home Science Degree. Mandy is now in Auckland where she has taken a position with New Zealand Bakels Ltd.

Kay Carmine graduated recently as an NAC air hostess and is now qualified to fly on all NAC aircraft. Kay, who is the daughter of Mr and Mrs J. B. Carmine, 46 Fergusson Drive, was educated at Lytton High' School and worked as a bank clerk before joining the airline.
