Pix from the past

From Mr Frank Wickens, formerly of Gisbome and now of Forest Hills, Auckland, come these two pictures from the old days.

In 1925 the Victoria Cricket Team from Australia toured New Zealand and visited Gisbome. This is the Poverty Bay-Waiapu team which played against the visitors but the outcome is lost in the mists of antiquity - or somewhere! Some of the names are still remembered in the district. The players are, from left, in front, W. J. Schollum, G. Oates, G. Franklin, Joe Schollum, G. N. Lockett and G. Langhorne. At back, A. R. Baker (umpire), F. Wickens, H. F. Forster, W. F. Cederwall (president P.B.C.A.), A. C. Cooke (captain), J. Oates, R. Schofield, W. Oates and O. R. Olsen (umpire)

In this other picture from Mr Wickens we see the Gisbome Borough Council of 1925 and, oddly enough, not many of these names will be readily called to mind except those of De Costa, Hill, Wildish and Doleman. While the haircut was the good old short back and sides, beards and mustaches were pretty much in evidence even in those days! The council is, from left, in front, Messrs I. Mirfield, H. E. Hill, G. Wildish (Mayor), T. G. Lawless and D. W. Coleman. At back, H. H. De Costa, Thos. Todd, J. H. Kane, J. T. Witty, J. A. McDonald, C. E. Ashton and J. Mouat

And soccer is nothing new on the Gisborne football scene either. Back in 1913 the Turanganui Football team won the Thursday competition, and the York Cup. From Mrs I. Bothamley, 1 Munro Street, comes this old picture of the team. In it are two relatives of hers, the Hanna brothers. Everybody got into the picture in those days as you will see. From left, in front, Fido 1 (a team pet), S. Palmer (inside right), Roy Wallace (inside left), W. Hanna (centre forward), Fido II (a team pet). Second row: B. Lewis (vice-president), J. Sumner (centre-half), Master Reid (mascot), S. Stone (secretary), H. J. Oates, captain (right fullback), B. H. Aislabie (president), Miss J. Warren (mascot), Jack Wallace (left fullback), and G. York (vice-president). At back: E. Warren (supporter), A. Reid (outside right), T. Hanna (right half), A. Ansell (goalkeeper), J. Coleman (left half), Jim Wallace (outside left), Mr Lennane (supporter) and J. Palmer (coach)

This 941b hapuka was caught by Tatapouri Sports Fishing Club member Sefton Gregory on May 12. Fishing from his boat 'Star Hunter' Mr. Gregory had quite a job to get the fish off the bottom. However, it was worth the effort as it turned out to be the heaviest groper ever caught and recorded by a member of the club.
