Third Time For the Burton

For the third year in succession, Gisborne's Frank Hale led his team to victory in the prestige bowling tournament for the Burton Trophy. This 65th contest of 25 exciting ends saw a final score of 20-19 against the Carlton Club of Auckland. More than 80 teams from all over the country competed at this Easter event.

The victorious team is, from left, Frank Hale (skip), John Bunyan (3), Tom Vaughan (2) and Kevin Bradley (lead). At the presentation Kevin Bradley was also presented with his gold star, while Frank Hale and Tom Vaughan received bars to their gold stars.

The runners-up receive the Robertson Memorial Shield in this event and it is named in honour of a former Gisborne bowler, D. G. Robertson. The shield was presented by his son, Mr Jack Robertson, who now plays for Naenae. From left, Jack Robertson, and Carlton Club members John Godwin (skip), Tony Klinac (3), Bob Leonard (2) and John Godwin jnr (lead).
