More Than A Canvas

Powerful finishes by the Gisborne Boys High School rowing teams in their classes at the N.Z. Secondary School Rowing championships at Wanganui assured them of two titles by more than a canvas. They also gained a second and a fourth, which is extra good for four teams. A tot of hard work by rowers and coaches has gone into this season's rowing and the boys deserve a helping hand with the few hundred dollars more that is needed to purchase a new eights boat.

This macrocarpa tree near the entrance to "Pouparae," the Cameron property on Bushmere Road, must be just about the biggest in the district, and one of the oldest. Estimates put it near the 100-year mark. The tree has a circumference of 37' 6", four and a half feet from the ground, a span of 114 feet, and a height of 70 feet. Unfortunately, some burning off over the road allowed a few sparks to settle in the tree which started it smoking and smouldering. Luckily rain came at the right time to put it out but whether irreparable damage has been done remains to be seen.
