Brave Deed Honoured

Eleven-year-old Cushla Kennedy proved herself a very brave girl when she rescued two girls in trouble in the sea at Opoutama during the last holidays. She swam more than 400 yards, altogether, to bring the two girls to safety. This is twice her capable swimming distance. All this happened when Cushla was a member of the 4th Gisbome Girls' Brigade picnic party at Opoutama. The Girls' Brigade International Headquarters recognised Cushla's bravery and awarded the Brigade's

Distinguished Service Award. This, an award not given lightly, was presented by the Mayor, Mr H. H. Barker, at the Officers Re-dedication Service held in the Te Hapara Baptist Church on March 3.
