First Woman Deacon †

Mrs Cherie Baker was ordained the first woman deacon of the Anglican Church in Gisborne by Bishop Paul Reeves in Holy Trinity on February 24. Mrs Baker, a widow, has been running her farm at Tahunga as well as studying for the 13 degrees required for the office. From left are the Anglican team ministry - the Reverends Rod Murphy, Tony Sutton and Dan Jensen, Bishop Reeves, Mrs Baker, Cook County chairman Terence Williams, people's warden John Speakman, and vicar's warden Jim Graham, Mrs Baker was also presented with four exquisite handworked sashes, from the four parishes, for use in her office.
