Riding Club Consolidates

With a holding yard and riding! ring being built for it, by Jaycees, on its property on Barker's Hill, a wider awareness of the club's aims and activities by the public, more contributions in cash, a trip to Auckland for disabled riders to meet Princess Anne and her husband, Captain Mark Phillips, plus a visit from the national coach, things are looking bright for the Gisborne branch of the Riding for the Disabled Association (R.D.A.).

Harriette Goldsmith on one of the horses used by the national coach, Miss Sue Bason, when she conducted a school for local instructors of the club at the showgrounds. Miss Bason said that once on a horse a disabled person was given a great psychological lift which was of tremendous benefit to them. Harriette was chosen to help Miss Bason demonstrate riding techniques because she is already an accomplished rider. Harriette was also the Gisborne representative in the guard of honour for Princess Anne.

Typical of the contributions received by the club recently was this one from the Young Farmers' Clubs of Gisborne and Tolaga Bay. They combined with $100 each to present a cheque for $200 to the club. This was accepted by committee chairman, Dr Vera Davidson (third from left). Y.F.C. members are, from left, Jim Brownlie, Reo Hall, Katrine Matthews, Margaret Atkins and Kevin Green.
