Mrs Margaret Jukes, 34 Waitangi Street (front left), and Mrs Ethel Jenkins, 3 Waitangi Street (front right), both celebrated their 90th birthdays within a week of each other this month. They are pictured with Arthur and Betty Jukes. Mrs Jukes is Arthur's mother and Mrs Jenkins is Betty's mother, and, of course, the mother-in-law each of the other one. It must be quite rare, therefore, to find two mothers-in-law of the same age, not to mention almost the same birth date. Mrs Jukes is the widow of the late Mr Michael Jukes, who started the family carrying business of M. E. Jukes and Son in 1922. She was formerly Margaret Drummond, and came to Gisborne from Dunedin in 1904. Mrs Jukes' interests have always been her family, and the home in which she has spent her life since she married. She and her husband built the first house in Waitangi Street. Mrs Jenkins has lived in Gisborne for 62 years, coming from Dunedin also. Her husband, the late Mr Robert Jenkins, who was an accountant with the firm of Fred Hall, was a very prominent bowler. The Jenkinses used to live in Russell Street. Mrs Jenkins, who is a life-member of the Riverside Women's Bowling Club, and also the first president of that club, is a foundation member of the Holy Trinity Mothers' Union. Her interests have always been her church and home.

Mr William Donnelly, 2 Root Street, realised a life-long ambition to see the running of a Melbourne Cup. His grown-up family of four boys and three girls "shouted" him a trip to Melbourne, on board the "Himalaya," for the running of the 1973 cup. The family was born and bred in Gisborne and their father is seen with his very classy souvenir copy of the race card for the cup meeting.

Sister Jess Richardson who has retired from her nursing career, the last 20 years being in out-patients at Cook Hospital, was accorded a farewell by ward sisters and supervisors at Ulverstone. A very happy evening was enjoyed and she (second from right) is pictured with, from left, Ward Sister Maud O'Neil, Second Assistant Matnon Ann Girling-Butcher, and First Assistant to the Chief Nursing Officer, Olive Brown.

The $1100 raised by Radio Gisborne 2ZG through concerted fund-raising efforts to send Marie McEwin to the Commonwealth Games as a hostess, was presented to P.B. Games Fund committee chairman Martin Lynch by Radio Gisborne manager Ian Vernazoni. By the time you read this Marie will be well versed in the duties of a Games Hostess. From left, Mr Vernazoni, Miss McEwin and Mr Lynch.
