Big and Little

In fact, all sizes of fish were brought in for the final weigh-in of the Guy and Dunsmore—Radio Gisborne annual junior fishing contest. The Turanganui River was the venue for the contest and out of the river came hundreds of herrings, many kahawai, and other assorted species.

Latching onto the biggest fish.was Allen Timpany, of 43 Dalton Street, who landed this 41b 5oz kahawai, thus winning for himself a very natty sleeping bag.

In contrast, Barbara Mutch won a fishing box for catching the smallest fish. If you look carefully you can actually see it on the box in front of the handle. At back are announcer Arthur Thorns (left) and Guy and Dunsmore representative Ian Dunsmore.

Carl Turipa (left) caught the most fish (86, herrings mostly), while a special consolation prize of a fishing box was given to Tom Grimson for catching 79 fish. Carl won a chilly bin.
