Pictures from the Past

From Mr Rich Brinkman, 205 Whitaker Street, come these pictures of the Makaraka Butchery taken about 1900. Mr Brinkman's grandfather, the late Thomas Howarth (who was born in Thames), came to Gisborne with his father, William Howarth, in 1877, at the age of eight. After leaving school and then working in the butchery trade with Rowland Hill for 15 years, Tom Howarth went into partnership at Makaraka with his brother George. Tom later took up farmland in Valley Road where he lived until his death. Howarth Street in the new subdivision off Valley Road has been named after him.

Her son Richard decided to leave the ratrace of big city life and come to the land of his forefathers... a full turn of the wheel, so to speak. Rich is pictured with his wife Betty, sons Mark, 11 (left) and Scott, 9, and daughter Laura, 5. Far
