East Coast Development Council

The twelve members of the new East Coast Regional Development Council were named by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Warren Freer, at a public meeting at the Sandown Hotel on October 3. The council will be responsible for the forward thinking, short and long term progress, and dynamic expansion of trade and industry in the whole of the East Coast area. This council is augmented by the Member of Parliament for Gisborne, Trevor Davey, and two Departmental representatives, Messrs Peter Fisher (Ministry of Works) and Wayne Scanlon, Wellington (Trade and Industry). The council is, from left, in front, Messrs Carl Houiahan (company director), Patrick McQuillan (secretary of Gisborne Harbour Board Employees' Union), Norman Perry (company director), Trevor Davey, Winton Ellis (managingdirector) and Tamati Fox (farmer). At back, James Douglas (secretary of Poverty Bay Power Board), Geoffrey Shanks (farmer), Rangi Paenga (City Councillor, and president of Gisborne Freezing Workers' Union), Wayne Scanlon, Peter Fisher, Geoffrey Musgrave (carrier), Thomas Thorp (lawyer), Terence Williams (farmer, and chairman of Cook County Council) and Henry Ngata (chartered accountant), Mr Perry, who is chairman of the regional council, comes from Opotiki, and Mr Fox is from Ruatoria.
