Athletics Open

A clash of New Zealand walking champions took place at the opening of the athletics season when Jim Trowell (Gisborne) and Owen Warner (West CoastNorth Island) entered the 20,000 metre walk. Warner beat Trowell by only four seconds after a tough contest. The meeting, which was sponsored by J. W. O'Donoghue Ltd, saw some good finishes in the track events. The presentation of Harrier Club trophies, won during the season, also took place.
