Airport

A Place of Honour

The Biggest Yet

×

After a varied career this 35-year-old Lockheed Lodestar now rests in a place of honour at the entrance to Gisborne Airport. The aircraft, which was converted for agricultural use in 1958, has flown just on 9000 top-dressing hours alone, and in that time has spread 90,000 tons of superphosphate and lime. Fieldair Ltd presented the aircraft as a gift to the city of Gisborne.

The biggest passenger plane to yet land in Gisborne arrived at the airport on July 21, when it brought the New Brighton soccer team up from Christchurch to play Gisborne City. The plane is a Hawker Siddeley 748, carries 48 passengers against the Friendship's 36/40, and is owned by Mount Cook Airlines.
