Boys on the Bridge

To test deflection in this steel single-span stock bridge built in Gisborne recently, 40 schoolboys were crowded on to it. This was the simplest way to achieve a test load of 1001bs to the foot, which is what the bridge is designed to carry. It will be erected at Te Tiki Station, near Tuai, at Lake Waikaremoana, to enable stock to cross the deep gorge which bisects the station. It has an advantage over a swing bridge in having no sway. The bridge, which was designed by Mr N. H. Thompson, Gisborne engineer, was built by Messrs Bingley and Brans, Gisborne.

Lower picture shows the structure, attended by Mr Ken Dixon, of Bingley and Brans, loaded on a trailer ready for the trip to Te Tiki. Some trouble was experienced on the narrow road leading to the station, but eventually the trip was completed successfully.
