In the Queen's Birthday Honours List, Gisborne Kiri Te Kanawa was awarded the O.B.E. Making a world wide name for herself, Kiri has also brought honour to this district, with which she still has strong ties.

Mrs M. Rangi, Tikitiki, has been awarded the M.B.E. Mrs Rangi, a pioneer of pre-school education in New Zealand, has also spent considerable time in Australia doing the same sort of work.

Miss Alice Berridge has been awarded the M.B.E. She is a member of a well established Gisborne family and received her education at the Central School and the Gisborne High School. Miss Berridge, who is a sister to Mr Jack Berridge, Salisbury Road, has been principal of Queen Victoria School since 1943, and it was mostly through her efforts that the school remained open several years ago, when it was in danger of closing through lack of funds. Miss Berridge helped start the appeal for the $300,000 which was needed to keep the school going.
