New Zealand's Saloon Car Champion for 1973 is Gisborne driver John Beckett. At the Awapuni Speedway, on February 3, John took the lead for most of the way in the exciting final, and finished the 25 laps in 14m 11,4s. John has raced his Holden for the past two seasons and is pictured here with his Dunlop and Champion sponsored car. He attributes a lot of his success in no small way to his car crew, Tony Coote and Michael Fouhy. The D. J. Barry cup and championship sash are shown with the car. With these also came the winning purse of $200.00.
