Pictures from the Past

This month we have three more pictures from Mr Stuart McGuinness, Waitangi Street.

This view of Gladstone Road (looking east) shows how the city's earlier planners valued wide streets — and not a motor vehicle in sight! If the planners could come back now they would most likely wish they had made them twice as wide.

This early days photo shows, at left, part of the Coronation Hotel, and the Masonic Hotel buildings, with the Herald newspaper next door to that. (No sign of the tower clock, so the pic. must have been taken before 1933).

This looks like the first Peel Street Bridge over the Taruheru River. The young trees have not long been planted along the river bank, and note the pleasant promenade along Read's Quay. No gas works yet, either!
