Where Daddy Learned to Swim

On a bright afternoon in early March, children of the Gisborne Central School gathered around the baths in the school grounds to watch classmates competing in the school's annual swimming sports.

Behind them sat many parents who themselves had competed in the same baths a generation ago.

Although the Central School is "getting on in years", it has recently been completely modernised, and chances are that still another generation will learn to swim and race in what is believed to be Gisborne's oldest swimming bath.

For the first time since 1929, the John Townley cup for boys and the Rowley Cup for girls were presented. Below, Mr Murray Upton, a member of the School Committee and an old pupil of the school, is seen presenting these and the Bramwell Cup for inter-house points to the successful competitors.
