Nowhere else in New Zealand, apparently, do surf life-saving club members hold what is known as a Pentathlon, in which selected club nominees demonstrate their all-round ability as surfmen by competing in five different events. On a recent Sunday at Wainui Beach, this unusual contest was held for the Kaiti Trophy, which was retained by the holder, Barry McLean, the former national belt champion.
