Memorable Weekend at Wairoa

The weekend of March 23, 24 and 25 was a memorable one for Wairoa. It was the occasion of the centenary celebrations of the Wairoa Primary School, and the opening of the new school building. The weather was fine and proceedings were a marked success in every respect. Old pupils of the school journeyed to Wairoa from far and wide for the event.

The opening ceremony at the new school was performed by the Minister for Education, Mr Algie, seen cutting the ribbon, as he holds a symbolic key presented to him by the contractor for the building, Mr W. Hedley.

Also present was the Leader of the Opposition, Mr W. Nash, who is seen with the chairman of the Wairoa School Committee, Mr R. E. Shortt (who was also chairman of the Celebrations Committee). Behind the cake which has just been cut, are the oldest girl pupil present, Mrs A. L. Russell, the oldest boy pupil, Mr R. F. Williams (Gisborne), and the youngest present pupil, Rex Donald.
