The Changing Face of Gisborne City
Some of the most notable changes in Gisborne of recent years have occurred in this section of Palmerston Road, just above the Peel Street bridge. In its own way, it has become a miniature community centre. From right to left, buildings are the women's rest room, the Plunket rooms, the headquarters of the Hard of Hearing League, and the new St. John Ambulance hall on the corner of Bright Street. Across the intersection is the Fire Brigade station. Behind these buildings, new Girl Guide hall is to be built shortly.

As in most towns and cities in New Zealand, the most outstanding changes in the local scene have been concerned with the building of State houses.
In Gisborne, large areas in the suburbs which formerly were vacant now house many hundreds of families in typical State house settlements.
Following completion of the Mangapapa block, Government's intention is to develop the Fitzgerald block in Haiti, where 214 sections will be available. Overall plan for this block is at present subject to objections from City Council about road widths and section sizes.
