Indoor Bowls

Although indoor bowls has been played in Gisborne for 20 years, it is only over the past couple of years that the game has really come into its own.

Now, almost any night of the week, in city and suburban halls, earnest groups of players can be found beading the knee over the bowling mats in a game which is growing so fast it might almost be called a craze.

In Gisborne city there are now 800 players; in New Zealand, 32,000. The figures speak more than words for what the game has to offer, but these pictures make a good try at capturing the atmosphere of a typical evening at the Poverty Bay club's hall.

Although pictures on these pages are predominately of men players, a high proportion of indoor bowls players are women, who have taken to the game with great enthusiasm.

This year, newly-formed P.B.-E.C. Centre, which has 10 clubs affiliated, plans to hold championships, and also to send teams to the Dominion championships at Hamilton in June.
