This magnificent trophy has been carved by Messrs Wiremu Te Parihi Mou, of Nga-Puhi, and Moni Taumanu, of Ngati-Porou, out of totara wood, and was donated by Te Tairawhiti in memory of the late Hetekia Te Kani Te Ua, O.B.E., of Te Aitanga-A-Mahaki tribe. The trophy is named Te Kohanga O Te Tangata. It is for the annual winner of the traditional style item at the N.Z. Polynesian Festival, This festival was held for the first time this year at Rotorua. The in-the-main carving comes from the Mangatu Blocks in the shadow of Maungahaumi, whose name was bestowed by Pawa, captain of the Hourouta Canoe. The base timber came from Tuwharetoa and is from the same block from which was carved the altar at Hato Paora (St Paul's) College Chapel, Feilding. It represents the hands of Tane, which separated Ranginui (the Sky-father), and Papatu-a-nuku (the Earth-mother). These hands moulded and fashioned, from earth, blood and water, the first human figure. Into this figure Tane breathed the Mauri-ora (the breath of life) entrusted to him for this purpose by the Giver of all life. The bowl, clasped by the hands, symbolises the vessel in which these primal ingredients were mixed. It is also the font from which all knowledge is derived and from which each of us, with purpose and perseverance, can obtain that wisdom and culture which is our heritage from our forefathers.

The Edward Murphy Maternity Hospital is to stay open for another 12 months. Public interest has been so strong that the hospital will operate for that period to see if the support is forthcoming. If not, then it will definitely close.
