Scouting And Guiding News

Founder's Day was held on February 20, in the Central School grounds. A big attendance of Scouts and Cubs filled the grounds, where the guest speaker was the Mayor, Mr H. H, Barker. A number of awards were also presented at the end of the Founder's Day service.

Others to receive awards from the Mayor were Mrs M. L. Casey, Gisborne District Cub Leader (Chief Scout's Commendation), and, from left, Messrs W. S. Ovenden (Mangapapa Group), G. P. King (Waiteata Group), D. L. Hughes (Te Hapara Group), R. S. Briant (Takitimu Group) – the Chief Scout's Commendation, and H. Hankey. Mangapapa Group (Medal of Merit), and J. R. Stevens, Zone Commissioner (Bar to Medal of Merit).

Warrants were awarded to Messrs J. R. Stevens and R. Hardcastle; Mr Stevens for Zone Commissioner, P.B., and Mr Hardcastle for District Commissioner, Gisborne District.

Also present at the parade was Norman Goodwin, of Palmerston North, who was on the last leg of his walk around the North Island to promote scouting. He is seen here with his well worn boots.

To mark Thinking Day (actually the birthday of Lord Baden-Powell), an early morning parade was held on Kaiti Hill. To finish off the day a Guide campfire was held off Riverside Road, to which Guides wore costumes of other lands. A real sing-a-long was enjoyed by all those attending, half of whom are seen in the picture
