Aussies Dominate

Classy Performances at Surf Carnival

The touring Australian team turned in some very classy performances to take most of the events in the three-team surf life-saving carnival held at Midway on January 25. The teams were Australia, Hawkes Bay and Gisborne.

A new event, to be seen on New Zealand beaches now, is the Beach Flag Race. This was won by Stephen Humphries (right) in a spectacular dive from Paul Burke, both of Australia.

In the beach flags, competitors start from a prone position; race for a given distance; then grab a baton. There is one baton less than there are competitors in each start, so competitors are eliminated until there is only the winner left.
