From the Bates family of Te Araroa we have these pics of Te Araroa in the heyday of freezing works, cordial factory and coastal shipping.

Taken on the killing floor of the freezing works at Hick's Bay, this pic shows part of the first kill taking place in 1919.

The old wharf and storage shed (at left) where coastal ships unloaded in the '20s. If conditions were suitable, goods were transferred to the township over the river-mouth, by horse and dray, and if not, then by small boats
