41 Entries

There were 41 entries in Class No.1 (pen of three prime lambs bred for export), the major class in the Export-Lamb competition held by the P.B. A. & P. Association on behalf of the N.Z. Meat Board. Entries in the other classes were up on last year and of a high standard.

Mr F. Alley won Class No.l (both on the hoof and on the hook). He is pictured with his entry and also the individual trophies won by him, which were the Licensed Victuallers' cup, the Nelson's Challenge trophy, and the Graham and Tolerton Memorial cup.

Mr B. Ryan (farmers' representative on the N.Z. Meat Board) presents Mr Alley with his trophies.

Mr S. Smith (centre) took the award for the champion iamb on the hook and also the award for the reserve champion lamb on the hook, both lambs being in the one entry. Mr Smith had two entries and this feat would be very difficult to equal. At left is Mr Derek McCartney, organiser of the competition, and at right is Mr W. Morley, judge of carcases on the hook.

Mr Ken Botherway, a supervising grader at Auckland for the N.Z. Meat Board, gave a very clear indication of the different requirements looked for by overseas buyers of New Zealand meats, both in lamb and beef.
