30 Higm Cost of Being in a Hurry 55

A new system of paying for speeding offences came into operation on July 1, by which traffic officers assess the fee to be paid according to speed. This fee is then payable at any office of the Ministry of Transport, but preferably at the one serving the district in which the offence takes place.

The table below lists only the two common zones, 30 mph and 55 mph, but this should not be taken to mean that other zone areas are not included in the scheme. If the fine is not paid within 21 days, normal court action will result, which has the effect, of course, of increasing the sum involved by the addition of court costs.

Very keen speedsters might consider adding extra dials to their speedometers to show at a glance how many dollars per hour they are doing (or about to "do" if they are caught), but others could be content to cut out this table and mount it on their dashboard as a cautionary ready reckoner.

30 mph zone (for 20 mph zone subtract 10 from mph figures; for 40 mph zone add 5)
