Gisborne all Over

What are they to Be?

The picture makes it worth noting, of course, that any trees will be planted right under the power and telegraph wires so care needs to be taken that there are no future clashes, whatever is planted.

The protection posts for the trees to be planted in Ormond Road are in place. The trees are not yet planted but ratepayers (whose money pays for the trees) seem to be against the idea of a hodgepodge of varieties superseding one another along the road (if the letters to the local paper and comment in the street are any indication), and all seem to be in favour of one type forming the whole avenue. This would give strength of character to the street, witness Napier's Norfolk pines on their Marine Parade, Wellington's Norfolk pines at Oriental Parade, and Palmerston North's cherry blossom avenue. So why not Gisborne Jacarandas, a tree which does so well here that it is often called the "Gisborne tree."

Reclamation on an area in the Waikanae Creek is at present being carried out by J. Wattie Canneries. When completed the area will carry walkways as recommended in the Turbott Plan. Next to this area will be the proposed by-pass link for heavy traffic, between Awapuni Road and Customhouse Street. Does this mean an eventual alleviation of that deafening noise from trucks and transporters now using Gladstone Road?

Revetments, such as these on the city river banks are scheduled for replacement by the City Council. An $11,000 programme is to be undertaken to upgrade the banks, with those between Peel Street and Gladstone Road being the first stage.
