New Workshop To Be Built
The Intellectually Handicapped Children Society has been given the go-ahead by the national executive to build a $65,000 workshop on their property in Temple Street (TOP).
The centre will be able to train up to 50 children and young people from the East Coast-Poverty Bay area. Funds, to be raised locally, will of course be eligible for the government subsidy.
The hostel in Albert Street is now also running a Day Care Centre, and this is under the direction of Miss Jan Fleming. This Centre is used to give respite to mothers of I.H.C. pre-schoolers and operates over three days of the week.
Kindergarten manipulative type equipment is used, along with ordinary toys, by the young ones
Inset - The new matron of the I.H.C. hostel in Albert Street is Mrs M. Sutton. Prior to this Mrs Sutton was an assistant at the Donnelly Training Centre.
Miss Fleming encourages the use of a large peg board.
Volunteer helper, Mrs K. B. Pilbrow, feeds a young attender, during the lunch break.
Mrs Pilbrow uses one of a set of skittles to attract attention.
