100 Years old and Still Drives Car!

Mr Jim Whitlock, 730 Gladstone Road, reached the grand age of 100 years on July 4.

Mr Whitlock came to New Zealand from Australia in 1898, and after working with bullock teams in the Whangarei bush areas, came to Gisborne in 1901 where he farmed until he retired.

He holds the distinction of being the oldest licensed motor vehicle driver in New Zealand, and is also still active in his garden.

A family party was held to celebrate his birthday and also that of his sister, Mrs Elizabeth Eddy, 29 Belfast Crescent, who was 90 last May.

But for the absence of Mr Whitlock's daughter, Mrs Dolly Murray in Auckland, there would have been five generations in this photo. However, we have, from left, Mr Whitlock, Mrs Doris Monk (grand-daughter), Mrs Bev Christian (great-grand-daughter) and Warwick and Rhona Christian (great-great-grandson and daughter), all now living in Papatoetoe.

At back are Mrs Paine's daughters, Mrs June Mackay (centre) and Mrs Margaret Law (right) with their offspring, Neil and Sandra Mackay (centre) and Greig Wayne Law.
