Nasty Corners are on Way Out

Easier Run At Otoko Hill For Motorists

The tight and badly-cambered corners at the foot of Otoko Hill on the Main North Highway 30 miles from Gisborne will be gone for ever by early next year.

Work is progressing well on the Waihuka Stream bridge which is 139 feet long and 28 feet wide. This bridge crosses the stream by the bend. When the bridge is completed motorists will be able to climb the hill easily on a straight piece of road instead of going round two sharp bends and over the old one-way bridge.

Earth-moving machines are in the process of ripping away part of the hill and forming the new road.

One of the monstrous machines is dwarfed by the size of the hill face which is being removed in a truly spectacular operation.

Some few miles nearer Gisborne, at the Waikohu No.3 bridge, the obvious benefits of new bridges and roading are evident.
