Abortion – a Social Problem

This was the theme of an address given by Professor A. W. Liley to an audience which packed the War Memorial Hall. Professor Liley, C.M.G., is the president of the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child, and gave the address prior to the formation of the Gisborne Branch of the society.

Justice Association Retirements

Two members of the Gisborne Justices' Association retired from office recently.

Visitors From Coronation Street– Almost

Mr Bill Hampshire and his wife Eva are guests of Mrs Millie Green, Palmerston Road. Mrs Hampshire and Mrs Green are cousins and although they have corresponded for many years this is the First time they met each other. The Hampshires come from Chadderton, seven miles north of Manchester and some of the characters from "Coronation Street" live their natural lives in the same area.

Mr Hampshire is a foundation member of the Chadderton and I'ailsworth Rotary Club, and has been a guest at a Gisborne Rotary Club tea-meeting during his stay in Gisborne.

New Lions District Governor

Mr Richard Harris and his wife Mary travel to Las Vegas, U.S.A., in May to attend the world conference of Lions Clubs. Mr Harris was elected district governor of Lions International District 202B at the Manawatu convention held earlier this year. He is a member of the Turanga Lions Club of Gisborne.

They are Mr W. W. Jonasen (left), and Mr Thos. Ryan. Mr Jonasen was president for eight years, from 1963-71, and Mr Ryan served as registrar for the past 17 years, from 1954-71.
