Pictures from the Past

From Mr Albert Bulst, Gladstone Road, we have these pictures of pioneering days up at Motu and Matawai. Life was really rough then and a man had to be tough to carve a farm out of the bushland, or make a living from the trees and timber. These pictures show parts of the area as it was between 1900 and 1905.

This is the old Motu Hotel, believe it or not. Any hotel or place offering shelter and food in those days was a welcome sight.

Going to school at Motu also meant long rides on the horse, or even by Shank's pony for some!

This picture of the early settlers' cottage was taken on the Korte property in 1902.
