Big Game on the Back Doorstep

Hunters need not take off to the wilds of the South Island when there is plenty of big game on the back doorstep – so to speak!

Up in the bush around Mat-awai, or along the East Coast ranges, deer and pig are plentiful – if you care to go after them. These pics show some of the game taken in these areas.

Richard Findsen holds up this boar with the aid of Mr Brownie Waikari and his two young sons (out of the picture). The boar weighed 1981bs. Need we say that everyone collapsed in a heap once the picture was taken

Scamp and Snoop, the two Waikari dogs, sniffing deer. But that's as far as they go. They will not go after the deer. Snoop was accidentally wounded by a bullet once while holding a pig, "Enough's enough ", he says! This picture was taken at Te Kumi, in the back of Hick's Bay

Three deer shot by Tom Waikari up Waerenga-o-kuri way. There's pocket money in this game too (if you'll pardon the pun). This lot sold for $182
