1000 Stride It Out

Big Money From Big Walk

Who says nobody walks today? An estimated thousand people, mostly young, took part in Gisborne's "Strideout '71" effort on a recent Saturday. In doing so, they raised $5,000.

The project was organised by the Marist Brothers to help finance a teachers' training college in Fiji. The national target was $100,000.

Participants sought sponsors at so much a mile, and met with a generous response. Sections of five, 10 and 20 miles were walked, some finishing more quickly than others — which figures!
