Too Hot!

Gisborne really turned on the heat on January 22, when all temperature records went by the board as the mercury soared to a sweltering 99.8 degrees (official recording at Darton Field station).

Fortunately the 22nd was a Sunday, and if the tide was a little higher than usual, that would be because most people were up to their necks in it.

Not so the poor firemen. With everything in a stage of tinder dryness, they were frequently out combating grass fires. This one was in Riverside Road.
