New Marae Dining Hall

The new dining hall on the Whakato marae at Manutuke was completed recently. Using voluntary labour only, a team of hard-working people built the dining hall under the direction of Messrs Gus Herkt and Carl Stewart. A presentation was made by the marae committee to Mr Herkt in appreciation of all the help and advice freely given them.

At the presentation the speakers were, from left, Messrs Carl Stewart, Gus Herkt, Naki Pare Te Ne (committee chairman), and Pare Jones (secretary). Note the ingenious tukutuku work which runs round the whole length of the walls.
