Popular Decision

A standing ovation was accorded Heather Booth when she was announced Sportswoman of the Year at the annual Sportsman of the Year Dinner. Organised to raise funds for the Crippled Children Society, the dinner this year netted $900.

Rod Coppins (Motor Racing): At time of Sportsman of the Year nominations closing was leading in North Island, New Zealand saloon car championships, and South Island Mercury 1000 championships (in both cases with three wins and one second). In non-champion-. ship events he had six wins, four seconds and one third in 11 events.

Garry Thompson (Surf Life Saving and Rugby): Member of team which won Nelson Shield, New Zealand's prestige trophy for six man R & R (the Waikanae team has now won this trophy six times); three times team member winning four man R & R; N.Z. Surf Team trialist; Captain High School Old Boys last seven years; 50 games for Poverty Bay; played against four international sides for P.B.E.C.

Roger Thorpe (Swimming): Twice winner of 100 metre freestyle gold medal at New Zealand restricted age championships. This has never been done before. Also winner of backstroke medal.

Tom Vaughan (Lawn Bowls): Champion of champion singles; champion pairs; champion fours; centre open singles; centre open pairs; winner Martin tournament; selected to represent Poverty Bay in the Rothmans inter-centre national tournament.

Brenda Walker (Basketball and Athletics): Captain Otago University team; captain N.Z. University team; represented N.Z. against Australia; finalist for N.Z. team for Jamaican world tournament; won shot, discus and javelin titles at 1969 Varsity Easter tournament; awarded 1969 Varsity blue in athletics; holder of N.Z.U. record for shot and discus.
