The first Waerenga-a-hika hotel was a real haven for travellers in the early days as it was the half-way house and lunch stop for those coming into town from Te Karaka and thereabouts. The picture comes from Ivan O'Connell, Fox Street. The hotel, which was licensed by Ivan's great-uncle, Com O'Connell, was burnt down Note the beer barrels at the bottom left-hand corner–no tankers flying around in those days.

This picture of the old Garrison Hall was sent in by Mr P. Niven, Wellington Street. It stood on the same site as the present Army Hall but was also destroyed by fire in 1931.
