For his unselfish action in rescuing an 82-year-old man from the Auckland harbour on April 23, 1968, Leading Seaman Michael Ashwell was awarded the British Empire Medal and, as seen here, with the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand's medal and citation. Michael is the son of Mr and Mrs Laurie Ashwell, 17 Churchill Crescent, and both awards were presented to him when he returned recently from service overseas.

Mrs Heehi Waihi with the cups and trophies won by the Manutuke branch of the Maori Women's Health League at the Te Teko conference competitions. The group did well with numerous entries in all sections, The prize-winning firescreen is beautifully decorated with shells.

One of the seven New Zealand graduates to gain his diploma of Maori Arts and Crafts from that institute in Rotorua recently was Tu Honotapu, jnr. He completed his course during the prescribed three year period and now goes back to Rotorua to carry on with his carving career. Tu is pictured with his parents, Mr Tu Honotapu, snr, and Mrs Maheno Honotapu and master carver John Taiapa (right).

At the Turanganui Guide Company's pre-Christmas party several awards were made. From left, Beverley Snook, Janeve Eraser and Karen Rock were awarded their first class badges while Gillian Leggett was awarded the Golden Award. Gillian is a member of the 8th Waipu Brownie Pack, Elgin, members of which were guests at the guides' party.
