The Gisborne Surfriders' Club held an invitation and open contest at Makorori over Labour weekend. Unfortunately the open had to be cancelled due to the poor conditions on the Monday. The contest was a success otherwise with over 100 outside competitors present.

The Bank of New South Wales Cup is presented by the bank's manager, Mr S. J. Maxwell, to the invitation winner Allan Byrne, Ben Hutchings was second and Doug Hislop (right) was third.
